Making a gum book is fun and easy! I've been working on filling a mucilage book the past few months and today I wanted to share a flip through of what I made forth with some tips for how to make your very own glue book.
What is a Gum Volume?
Glue books take many different names – some people call them smash books or smash journals and often times they are very similar to junk journals, since Anything can exist used to brand them – even your junk mail service!
The principal reason we call them glue books is considering you gum things down in information technology. If information technology'due south flat and you lot can glue it in – you lot can use almost anything to make a glue book!
Why Brand and Use a Mucilage Book?
When I first started making mucilage books, my husband idea I was crazy. Why are you cutting upward and gluing stuff into a notebook? Wouldn't it exist easier to keep them equally, y'know…books y'all don't cut up?
Well, there'southward a LOT of dissimilar reasons yous might want to make a glue book!
1. Inspirational Resource
Mucilage books are a great source of inspiration. You can put annihilation in them, then I love to glue in different colors, textures, patterns, photographs, artwork and more.
All of these things tin can help inspire you in your fine art journals and your inventiveness. If you're e'er in a creative slump, a gum volume can requite you just that spark of inspiration you needed.
ii. As a Way to Save Space
Keeping a agglomeration of books and magazines on mitt isn't ever applied. I Honey books and magazines, but I know I would never take infinite for all the books I'd like to read and flip through, not to mention storing all the ephemera I like to collect.
A glue book allows you to actually use that ephemera instead of having huge piles to manage and shop. {Although we do have some dandy tips for storing ephemera, see our postal service How to Organize Paper Ephemera & Junk Journal Supplies Here.}
3. Intuitive Process for Personal Evolution
One of the things I love about creating mucilage books is it is a completely intuitive process. You don't take to worry about the things yous glue together on a folio making sense – you don't fifty-fifty take to worry about where you put them on the page!
As you fill up the pages in your glue volume, yous'll start to notice a lot of wisdom and symbols come together on a page. There's been and then many times I wait back on pages and detect at that place'south a LOT of wisdom in the different images and words I cut out and glued down in the volume.
Now that nosotros've covered 3 great reasons to make a glue book, allow's become over how to make your very own glue volume using a composition notebook and whatsoever you like to fill it upwards with!
How to Make a Gum Book Step past Step
ane. Assemble Your Supplies and Materials
Gathering your supplies and materials is pretty unproblematic and most probable you already take what you need or yous can find all of these things very inexpensively at your local stores.
- Old Magazines and Books/Junk Mail {See our post Things to put in a Junk Journal for some ideas!}
- Composition Notebook
- Scissors
- Glue {I use a bones glue stick, though y'all of grade tin can use matte gel medium though wrinkling may occur with the gel medium}
two. Get Through Things to Gum in Your Pages
I Honey cutting up magazines for fun, and it'due south not uncommon for me to spend a few hours in front end of a good movie with a cat past my side and magazines and scissors in hand. It's the PURR-fect rainy solar day activity, although the cat oft decides to sleep in my box of newspaper!
If you already have a newspaper ephemera collection, you tin skip the step of cutting items out and merely have fun going through and finding images and words that really capture your attention.
Again, this isn't something you want to call up too much about it. Information technology'due south an intuitive process, so if you have something in your hand try to make a decision on whether you'll apply it or not inside 3 seconds or less.
iii. Glue It Downward!
Gluing stuff into the volume is simply equally fun equally cutting it upwardly – and of course yous can always do both at the aforementioned time – it's not uncommon for me to find something I like immediately and know I want to put information technology somewhere in the book.
The 3 second rule applies here also – don't overthink too much about where you mucilage things down. While it's helpful to start with larger images first for layering, it's all-time to just get it out of your hands and into the book.
